Excellent Japanese cuisine. Top quality ingredients and attentive service. Our only gripe was that the kitchen staff kept on throwing empty bottles into a bin nearby, which was disturbing and not conducive to a relaxing experience.

Absolutely loved Umi! I had never had ramen before, but having tried the chicken Karagee one, I realised I was missing so much! My wife and I had also tempura prawns, takoyaki and chicken gyozas and enjoyed every single one of them. Price-wise is good value for money and we'll be going back for sushi soon!

My husband an I had the gyoza and ebi lollipop dishes to start, and umi tori ramen and truffle ramen for mains. Everything was delicious, and both ramen dishes were so hearty and filling. The staff were helpful, friendly and polite. Will definitely be back!

Excellent service from the beginning. Very interesting and imaginative Japanese decor. Beautiful food. Ramen was rich, spicy, full of depth and creamy. Selection included crab and sushi. All excellent. House beer is fragrant and compliments the food superbly. Staff always completed tasks if asking for extras. Asked for the bill and card reader came with the bill ant same time instead of the usual dropping off bill and running away. It was utterly excellent from start to finish. Thanks

Amazing! New favourite place in edinburgh. The food is really fresh and beautifully prepared, the staff are all very friendly and helpful, and the decor is lovely. The menu looks expensive at first, but when we share everything it works out very reasonable, especially for such great quality food and drinks. Cannot recommend enough!
The only con I would mention is that the booth seats are uncomfortable and difficult for those with disabilities. It would be helpful if it could be made known if you’ll be in these booths upon booking, or those with disabilities should request seats with regular chairs.

Umi Japanese was a great find very close to the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh.
We massively over ordered as the dishes were much bigger than we expected, but all were delicious.
Service is fast and efficient and ambience is really nice with many different nooks and seating options.
Overall great value for money.
Coming from Australia where we have access to a plethora of outstanding Asian cuisine, we are constantly on the hunt for a decent Japanese restaurant in Scotland. Umi nicely fits the bill. We will be back.

Umi has the best prawn tempura I have tasted - and I lived in Japan for ever 3 years. The sushi and sashimi are high quality and carefully prepared too.

Maybe just our bad luck but a pre booked table for 2 was between 2 other sets of diners - not ideal - and probably the worst table for 2 in the restaurant - but other than that the food was fantastic and service excellent

The food and service is excellent. However we were seated at table 6 which is close to the front door. Every time the door opened, which was often given how good the restaurant is, a cold blast whipped through the door. We cut our meal short and left quickly because it was so cold.

No acknowledgement of the special occasion. Mains did not arrive at the same time. Not ideal for people with different dietary requirements as this would leave one looking at the other eating. It would be ok if sharing the food. The atmosphere is nice and cosy. Great food overall was great.
