Just love it here. Bit sceptical when we first visited as surrounding area looked very run down, lots of closed shops graffitied over but The Canteen is a diamond in the rough. Fabulous all round. Staff are very friendly, ambiance is cool and well the food is beyond this world, especially those salt and pepper mushrooms mwah!!

Food is incredible. My partner and I have been to the canteen twice now, once for valentines and once as a midweek date night, and both times we've been blown away by how amazing the vegan food tastes, and how good the selection is compared to other restaurants. Great staff, very considerate and friendly. The atmosphere feeds off this: relaxed ave welcoming.
We had 6 small dishes to eat and they were all delicious. Especially the Korean BBQ tempeh and crushed potatoes with sriracha.

We used to live near the canteen and went quite a lot for years because of the great value and quality, but not been since before Covid.
The facelift looks great, staff were still very friendly, and the food is still excellent.
But two things I'd like to feed back...
1) the acoustics or PA are still terrible, so when music is played it is mostly an unpleasant throb which makes it an effort to hear who you are speaking with. When it's music you like, that's bearable. When it's not (and it wasn't), it does diminish the experience!
2) whilst the food was lovely, it was really expensive! When I ordered arancini for £7.50 I'd expect at least 4 and maybe 6 (going on other restaurants in Bristol, and given the Canteen's tradition and our past experience). We got two, though they were lovely. And 5 pieces of asparagus for £10? Also delicious, but would also expect 8 or 10. You can get full courses at many great places in Bristol for £10! Finally purple sprouting broccoli and cavelo Nero for £8.50? Again, very tasty and again, I'd expect about twice as much.
Only the tempeh burger come close to what I would call good value, and the smashed potatoes in maybe. But £10 in many places would include some sort of fries or side salad, or at least that for around £12.
So... Great to see the Canteen still going strong, and the local, sustainable ethos etc, but the portions for the price were a bit of a shock and we wouldn't go back based on that alone (though wouldn't stop me recommending eating there to others, but would make them aware of portion sizes).
I am guessing the main cost of creating the meal is the labour (skill and time), so to have slightly larger portions would not add greatly to the cost.
But I don't know the Canteen's rent, labour costs, food costs etc, so perhaps I am unrealistic. But given prices and portions at what I'd call comparable places (and some arguably more high end), it can/is being done elsewhere.

We had a lovely time and there was a lovely atmosphere. The staff were nice and friendly. There weren’t any menu’s on the tables though and the potatoes had run out (which everyone at the table wanted to order). The food was mostly delicious - the teriyaki tempeh and hummus especially! We were very disappointed with the pakora though as it didn’t taste of anything. Will be back :)

Great food and table. I am not sure if I missed this somewhere, but we got asked to leave our table we were drinking on after food because the tables needed moving. We didn't get much warning for this and there were no other tables to go to so just had to leave which was a shame. Really think this needs to be explained when you book. When we challenged it the waiter said it's always the case and they always have live music but we didn't know that so that response wasn't very helpful for us. Other than that the food was gorgeous.

I was very disturbed by the noise, the place is lacking soundproofing.
You have to shout to talk to people and it is hard to hear anyone. It is a shame as everything else about the place is really good.
